VD Satheesan In a historic moment witnessed by thousands at the Central Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, Shri Vadassery Damodaran (V.D.) Satheesan was sworn in as the 13th Chief Minister of Kerala on May 18, 2026. The grand ceremony formally ended a decade of Left Democratic Front (LDF) rule under CPI(M) veteran Pinarayi Vijayan, and ushered in a fresh chapter of governance under the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).
Who Is V.D. Satheesan? A Profile of Kerala’s New Chief Minister
Born on May 31, 1964, in Nettoor, Ernakulam District, Vadassery Damodaran Satheesan is a lawyer and politician of the Indian National Congress (INC) who has spent nearly three decades shaping Kerala’s political landscape.
Satheesan completed his early education at Panangad High School before earning his undergraduate degree from Sacred Heart College, Thevara, and a postgraduate degree in Social Work (MSW) from Rajagiri College of Social Sciences, Kochi. Not stopping there, he went on to earn an LLB from Kerala Law Academy Law College and an LLM from Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram — a sharp legal mind that would later define his Parliamentary style. He practised law at the Kerala High Court before dedicating himself fully to public life.
His political roots trace back to the student movement. He served as Chairman of the Mahatma Gandhi University Union (1986–87) and as Secretary of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), and rose through the ranks of the Kerala Students Union (KSU) and Youth Congress before stepping into electoral politics.
He is married to R. Lakshmi Priya, and the couple have a daughter, Unnimaya.
From Paravur to the Chief Minister’s Office: A Journey of Persistence
Satheesan’s political story is less about overnight success and more about remarkable persistence in the face of missed opportunities. He first contested the Kerala Assembly elections in 1996 from the Paravur constituency but lost to the CPI candidate P. Raju. However, he did not give up.
In 2001, he won the Paravur seat for the first time — the beginning of what would become six consecutive terms from the same constituency, a rare feat in Indian politics. In the 2026 elections, he secured 78,658 votes, defeating the CPI candidate ET Taison Master by a margin of over 20,600 votes, consolidating 25 uninterrupted years of representation from Paravur.
Over the years, he served as Chairman of the Kerala Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee and Estimates Committee, worked as AICC Secretary in charge of Tamil Nadu, and served as KPCC Vice-President. In 2016, he was appointed Chief Whip of the Congress Legislature Party in the Oommen Chandy-led opposition.
The defining turning point in his career came in 2021, when — after the UDF’s crushing defeat — the Congress high command surprised many by appointing Satheesan as Leader of the Opposition, bypassing more senior names. It was a signal of trust. For the next five years, he used that platform brilliantly, building a reputation as perhaps the Congress party’s most effective legislative performer in Kerala — known for methodical preparation, precise factual attacks, and dismantling government arguments with surgical clarity.
The 2026 Kerala Election Verdict: A Mandate for Change
The 2026 Kerala Assembly Elections, held on April 9, delivered one of the most decisive mandates in the state’s history. The UDF swept to power, winning 102 seats in the 140-member House. The Congress alone bagged 63 seats — its highest-ever tally in Kerala — while alliance partner IUML added 22 seats, giving the UDF a clear and comfortable majority.
After ten days of deliberations involving other senior contenders such as K.C. Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala, the Congress high command chose Satheesan to lead the state — the man who had spearheaded the campaign and delivered the majority that made this moment possible.
A Historic Swearing-In Ceremony
The oath-taking ceremony at Central Stadium was a show of national strength for the Congress party. Governor Rajendra V. Arlekar administered the oath of office at around 10 AM. Satheesan took the oath in the name of God, while two cabinet members opted for solemn affirmation.
Among the distinguished attendees were Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge, along with Chief Ministers of Karnataka, Telangana, and Himachal Pradesh. Notably, the government formation was completed in under 24 hours — the fastest in Kerala’s history.
A 20-member Cabinet was sworn in alongside Satheesan, with 14 first-time ministers — a deliberate signal of generational change. Senior leader Ramesh Chennithala was named Home Minister, and Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan was appointed Speaker of the Assembly, with Shanimol Usman as Deputy Speaker.
Satheesan’s Vision for Kerala
Speaking ahead of the ceremony, the new Chief Minister declared:
“With a sense of divine responsibility, I remain committed to ensuring inclusive governance, respecting all communities, and prioritising the development and progress of Kerala.”
He has committed to fulfilling the five guarantees announced by Rahul Gandhi during the campaign, and has promised better administration, stronger law and order, and inclusive development for all sections of society.
At 61, Shri V.D. Satheesan’s elevation to Kerala’s highest office is not just a personal triumph — it is the culmination of decades of patience, discipline, and unwavering service. From student leader to legal practitioner, from a first-time loser to a six-time MLA, and from Leader of the Opposition to Chief Minister — his journey is a testament to the power of resilience in democratic politics.
As Kerala enters this new chapter, the hopes of millions rest on the shoulders of a man who knows the state’s challenges intimately and has waited a lifetime for this moment of responsibility.
